Appetizers & Drinks

This page contains a collection of Appetizers & Drinks collected through the years and found in the pages of recipe books used by our ancestors, first mine, and then those I’ve collected from others.

Tried and tested by relatives, but not all by me, the collection evolves. The ingredients we use may differ from what our ancestors used, so the recipes may need to be tweeked.

Hot Spiced Nectar

  • 3 cups apricot nectar
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1 cup water
  • Juice of 1 lime (2 Tbsp..)
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 6-1 inch cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 tsp whole cloves

In a large saucepan, combine nectar, orange juice, water, lime juice, and sugar.  Tie spices in cheesecloth bag and add to the juice.  Bring to a boil and simmer uncovered 15 minutes.  Discard the spice bag.  Serve hot.

6 – 1/2 cup servings

Quilting Day Punch

5 quarts water

2 cups sugar (or to taste)

1 Tbsp. Lemon Extract

1 Tbsp. Citric Acid

Mix together and stir until the sugar is dissolved.

(Citric Acid is a powder usually found in the vitamin section of a pharmacy or general store.  Quilting day punch was a substitute for lemonade when there were no lemons to be found.)
